Why photographs matter

Photographs are one of the first things guests notice when viewing your Place. They help guests understand the setting, character and facilities before deciding whether to book.

Clear, attractive and accurate photographs can make your listing more appealing while also reducing questions and misunderstandings.

Choosing your cover photo

Your cover photo is the main image used to represent your Place throughout Hidden Places. It may appear in search results, on your listing and in other promotional areas.

Choose a photograph that clearly shows the strongest or most distinctive feature of the Place.

• Use a landscape photograph where possible.
• Choose a bright, clear and well-focused image.
• Show the wider setting rather than a small detail.
• Avoid placing important features near the image edges.
• Do not use screenshots, posters or images containing text.

What photographs should you include?

Your gallery should help guests understand the complete visit, not only the most attractive view.

• The main landscape or feature of the Place.
• Different areas guests are permitted to use.
• Paths, entrances and access routes.
• Parking or drop-off areas.
• Toilets, shelters and other facilities.
• Any seating, firepit or picnic areas.
• Views across the surrounding landscape.
• Features that may affect accessibility.

Taking good photographs

You do not need professional equipment. A modern mobile phone can produce excellent photographs when used carefully.

• Take photographs during daylight.
• Keep the camera level.
• Clean the camera lens before taking photographs.
• Avoid heavy filters or unrealistic editing.
• Remove unnecessary clutter where practical.
• Take several photographs and upload only the clearest.

Represent the Place honestly

Photographs should accurately reflect what guests will see when they arrive. Avoid old images that no longer represent the Place or angles that deliberately hide important limitations.

Seasonal photographs are welcome, but your gallery should make it clear when the Place may look different at other times of year.

Managing your gallery

You can upload additional photographs, remove images that are no longer needed and choose which image should be used as the cover photo.

Review your gallery periodically and replace photographs when the landscape, facilities or access arrangements change.
